The Atherton Tablelands are inland from Cairns and mostly rainforests mixed with the rolling hills you would expect to find in UK not Oz, definitely a contrast from the bush we have become used to.
We drove around on a waterfall route and saw some awesome falls. The Dinner falls were beautiful and they're by the Crater - a huge hole 80ft in diameter and so deep that the water on the top looks solid! We visited the 3 waterfalls at Milla Milla, one had a pool you could swim in and Ricky swam across to chill out behind the fall. The scenery here was awesome and from the McHuge lookout point you could see for miles, it is hard to beleive we are so close to Cairns but it is so different.
The Tabelands are home to the Cassowary an endangered bird like an emu but they have been known to be quite vicious. There are reports of a lady being attacked by one in the Dinner falls area, they use their claws to strike you in the chest and this can be fatal. Thank goodness we didn't come across any even though we wanted to see one!
We also visited the Crater Lakes at Eacham after Alice & James had been so impressed with them. They are two lakes formed from a volcano craters and is truely gorgeous.
