After our dive we followed Alice & James who we had dived with to a campsite they had found at Palm Cove just 20km north of Cairns.
Palm Cove is a beautiful relaxed location with a perfect white sandy beach and the feel of a small elite resort that no one ha quite discovered yet. We arrived on Wednesday night and spent the evening talking about the Reef which we could not actually believe we had dived and the sharks which we could not believe we had dived with!!
Thursday we decided it was time to do absolutely nothing - it was the start of a well deserved Easter break!! (well this driving thing is exhausting). We wandered along the village shops exploring and found a cafe for breakfast then went back to the campsite where ricky had managed to sweet talk the owners into lending him a fishing rod. We set off for the jetty and Ricky fished till late into the evening and I read. Once it got dark the jetty starts to buzz with atmosphere as the locals come down to fish. Our campsite manager Doug (famous in these parts) brings his fishing trolley with music and a BBQ and of course the beers, the party lasts all night!
Things were looking slow until the rod started to bend and Ricky reeled in a Rod- yes we'd (I was holding the rod at the time)caught another fishing rod. Yipee now we had a rod - not for long once word got around we found out a kid had lost his rod yesterday so we had to give it back in exchange for a few beers!
Then suddenly it all got exciting Ricky had caught a SHARK- imagine that his 1st night fishing and he did better than anyone else I was so proud!!! Doug said we could eat it so he gutted it, skinned it and filleted it on the jetty and we went home to eat 'fish n chips'- funny how we were swimming with sharks yesterday and eating them today.
Another day of fishing, a relaxing day not so sucessful for us but this time Doug caught a 80kilo Grouper. It was 50yrs old and took 4 men to get it on to the jetty and even more to keep it there before chucking it back in !! This evening Alice & James returned from their trip up to the Daintree and they brought with them Hot Cross Buns!! we'd forgotten all about easter.
Alice & James's last day before they fly to Darwin - What could we do?
Ricky and James went to check out the 9 hole Golf Course ranked 9th in OZ while Alice and I went to the lagoon in Cairns a man made beach where you can sunbathe without fear of jellyfish! I am proud to say Ricky won the golf which is good considering he hasn't played since Nov and James has a handicapp of 25. A very relaxing day but a shame to say goodbye to our new friends.
