Well I finally arrived on Ko Phi Phi after pretty much 81 hours of non stop travel from Laos. Barely able to speak I found a place to stay and booked a scuba course and spent the last few days of travel relaxing in tropical paradise learning to dive. I really can;t say enough about the diving which was absolutely incredible. I did my opne water certification and saw stuff that I had never imagined I'd see - on my third dive I say a 2 meter leopard shark as soon as my instructor and I descended below the waves. Huge schools of barracuda and a myridad of other brightly coloured fish and coral.
While not diving I spent time walking around the isalnd and havinjg a great time with the people I met there. It was great to just sit there and relax and do nothing before having to start the journey home. The island itself is beatiful but still shows pretty extensive signs of damage from the Tsunami. Much of the islands's beach resorts were washed away when a 10m wave inundated the island from the north sweeping much of the North shore away. Alot of rebuilding wortk is going on but even this long after the devastation you can get a sense of how extensive the devastation was. Even today the debris being washed up on the shore is endless and its a full time job keeping the beaches clear of rubbish.
As a side note there seemed to be an inordinate number of lady boys on the island especially given its size as you approach these "women " from afar they seem quite pretty but up close you begin to notice things that aren;t quite right. You start doing the check list: makeup - check, boobs - check, long haiir - check, big square hands and feet - umm hang on, Adam's Apple - wait, thats just not right. Its juts funny to see, the other Thais seem to not to mind and just take it in their stride though it can be quite disconcerting to see an extremely effeminate man sashaying down the street.
