The BIG Temple

Text written in: English

We left at 6.45 am on the train to Thanjuvar. We were lucky to get on and had to go see the supervisor to get on the tourist quota. We got an A/C chair ticket. It was freezing in the carriage. The train goes to Tiruchirappalli then you catch a bus for 1.5 hr to Thanju. We stayed at Lion City, a cheap clean and central hotel in walking of distance of everything except the state bus station which is 6km out of town and costs 70Rs for a rickshaw and only 6Rs for the bus. The 'Big Temple' is a world heritage site, and lives up to its name. Although no longer a fully working temple it still has its deity in place and there are worshippers. Which means no shoes. It's a big site to walk around bare foot. Behind the temple is a nice park and pond you can row on. We went to the palace which is more than a little run down but was worth the visit. We took a guide for 100Rs who explained what little there was but also took us to some other sites that we would have had difficulty finding on our own. Whilst there we came across a student anti-corruption protest. Excellent for its sentiment and also for the girls admiration of Allan. We feel like pop stars now.
