Arrived over night from Varkala on the train. It was a good journey, got plenty of sleep. We arrived at 6 am and walked to the recommended Thilaga hotel. It was a tip filthy and no sink in the bathroom. We were too tired to look for anywhere else so we just changed rooms. After a short snooze we visited the Minakshi Temple. A very impressive large structure that dominates the skyline. We got a guide for 150 Rs, which was worthwhile. There was several weddings taking place in the temple and it was very busy. Afterwards we went by local bus to visit the Gandhi museum. Some way out of the centre of town but worth the trouble to go and see. There was a history of India's struggle for independence (an eye opener into the cruelty of previous British governments), which then dovetails into the Gandhi section of the museum. They also have a replica of Gandhi's house and the dhoti he was shot in, complete with blood stain. In the evening we had dinner on the Park Plaza rooftop restaurant, with views of the floodlit temple. At 9pm we went back to the temple to watch the procession of Sundareswarar being taken to Minakshi to sleep by her side for the night. It was an eye-opener to see how devout the Hindu's are. Ordinary people in a trance at the sight of this statue being moved.
