Got to Varkala early afternoon after catching a couple of local buses. Beat up and scarey driving but we made it. Varkala isn't easy to get to and he roads are terrible but that's part of the appeal we guess. It is a spread out town where the beach is some way away and is set on a clifftop. There are a couple of entry stairs down th the beach, which is beautiful and quiet. We stayed in Preeth Hotel,(700 R per night plus tax), which was recommended by Phil and Pam who we met in Chochin. Good recommendation, it has a pool, clean and big. We have spent most of our time there. We did spend a day down at the beach, but you just get sandy and salty, so we prefer the pool. The cliff top if now full of shops and restuarants. Those that have been coming here for a few years say that the biggest development has been in the last 2 years. But it isn't busy and the local businessmen are friendly and generally not to pushy. There are a lot of Tibetains here and they are excetionally friendly. Their clothes, jewellery and ornaments look great and we can't wait to go to Nepal and buy some. Just now we try to avoid buying too much stuff as are bags are heavy and full enough. Tonight we catch an overnight train to Madurai in Tamil Nadu. This is the begining of our trip inland and up the east coast to Kolkata and Darjeeling. We will be visiting the places hit by the tsunami up this coast, so hopefully things are getting back to normal. Catch you all later
