A night in Jail

Text written in: English

Addo Elephant park is fantastic. It has a great colection of animals and is well organised. We drove around for a couple of hours with very few vehicles around spotting kudu, eland, Gemsbok, etc but oddly no elephants. They also have lions so we were on the lookout for them too. No joy, we did see a dead kudu, but no lions. We went to a waterhole and got real close to a family of vervet monkeys with some very young babies. Though experience had taught us not to get too close. More pains game came to the waterhole, unlike Etosha and it was great to watch their behaviour. WE eventually saw a couple of bull elephants one young the other older. They where on their way to another watering hole whilst we were driving along. In the Serengeti we had come accross a fmily of elephants who crossed the road in front of us. Our guide, John, left a gap for them to walk through and it was one of the best sights of the trip. Allan tried to do the same. No problems with the young elephant, but the older one decided to test our nerve and charged the car. It worked wwe started the car pretty quick and reversed out of there. Still bemoaning our lack of elephants in a park with 3,000 of them, ourv luck was about to change. Taking our leftover pizza from the night before we headed to the rest are for lunch. There is a water hole there too and as we went for our lunch, over 50 elephants came for a drink and to play around in the water. Claire was absolutely captivated by the scene. It was wild. In the afternoon we headed out on another safari abd saw some buffalo and stuff. Then we drove to Grahamstown where our bed for the night was the local prison! Despite the grim surroundings it was surprisingly comfortable, with the added bonus f no bugs being able to penetrate the 4ft walls. Fortunatley we were let out in the evening for good behaviour and went to the movies. We watched the Incredibles, a good movie. Next day was another early start as we planned to visit Fish River Complex, another game reserve, as well as Steve Biko's grave, on route to Coffee Bay.
