Futbol de Brasil

Text written in: English

Arrived tired and exhausted at my hostel in the heart of Copacabana... a funky place that runs tours and organises events for gringos. So I signed up for a footy match that night at Rio's world famous stadium.

MaracanĂ£ is a stadium for the most popular game in the world - football. It is also the home for the most successful national football team in the world - Brasil being the only country to have won five World Cups. The stadium was built in 1950 and the World Cup final that year saw 199 854 fans crowd into the stadium! Officially it's meant to seat 125 000, but this is Brasil, arguably home also to the world's most passionate football fans...

Unfortunately the Brasil Cup could not draw the same sized crowd, however Fluminense's 3 - 1 win over Campinense saw me and eleven thousand fans banging drums, waving flags, singing songs, shouting abuse and generally having a great time :)
