this is more like it! paradise found......
just an update really on what ive been up to in the last month or so. and im afraid its another longish one! sorry!
i left for sunny fiji about 3 weeks ago, and my god it was soo hot. 40 degrees with pretty much maximum humidity and it was the rainy
season. we had booked into the main island of vitu levu for about a
week, which isnt great as its a bit of a crap island, rubbish
beaches and the main city/town centre is a bit grim. those were a
pretty slow 6 days as the only thing that you could do was to
sunbathe and sunbathe. we made a few trips into town, and this one time, this car pulled up next to us and asked if we were going into
town so we hopped in(fijians being really laid back and friendly
that you dont need to worry). we went own the main road for a few
minutes and then he turned off down a dirt track, and said, dont
worry, this is a shortcut! whilst me and kristian were worried about
getting stabbed up , he mentioned, 'this is the poor area', with all
the wooden shacks and burnt out car wrecks. he then pulls up outside
one of these shacks, leaves us for 5 minutes and comes back and we
carry on towards town. then the inevitable question of, do you want
some weed. he unwrapped this tin foil stalk of it, probably worth
about 400squids and offered it to us for $20! we tried excuses like
we dont smoke it anymore and that we have given up and he eventually
got the message. then in town we were offered cocaine and lsd etc
etc. anyway after kristian left, me and this girl i met fiona
travlled to the Yasawa islands to get into real fiji with proper
sandy beaches and laid back lifestyle.
out first stop was nanaya lalaiai (????) where the waters were
the bluest waters in the world, with awesome coral and loads and
loads of real life nemos! some of the starfish were bright blue, so
many different colours! met some swiss people too who we hung round
with for the next few days. we went to the blue lagoon, snorkelled
in the coral gardens, snorkelled with manta rays and in a aplane
wreck too. we really didnt do much at all except more sunbathing and
swimming. then we went to the next island for a couple of days
called Korovou, and we got one of the roughest boats to the other
side of the island to visit a local school whihc was good. they
performed a dance for us and we looked round ther classrooms etc.
the evening were spending doing stupid 'bula dancing' with the
fijian women who had beards and sideburns.......nice! there was no
electricity on these islands either or running water so you had to
drink rainwater (which wasnt all that bad), and they served us 'lamb
chops' which was actually goat, not very nice! our last island was
paradise found, the best beaches, whitest sand, great weather, palm
fringed coves, hammocks all over the place. we stayed in 28 bed
dorms for most of this time which wasnt as bad as we expected, no
one snored too much or anything! then that was pretty much it for
fiji, except the kava drinking ceremonies. they have this
traditional drink in fiji, made from the root of a plant, which has
been growing for about 8-12 years. they mash it up and mix it with
water, and it looks like muddy water and tastes the same as muddy
water. it is vile. but if you have anough of it it is meant to have
a hallucongenic effect ( this didnt happen to me). ts been banned
pretty much everywhere all over the world but here we were drinking
it like there was no tommorrow, even though it was like drinking out
of a muddy puddle. and it made your mouth go numb.
