Today we visited an active volcano. From Whakatane we took a ferry 50km north to White island and had a guided tour around the island seeing Sulphur chimneys and also 'the most acidic lake in the world' in the centre of the island. The ferry crossing to the island was pretty rough for my standards, but I managed not to decorate the boat, even though a few others were.
After a late lunch we headed back to Whakatane and in general converstaion found out that the mother of my guide for the day grew up King's Lynn - I know I have said it before, but 'it really is a small world!'
Back on dry land, we drove to Opotiki, the gateway to the East Cape.
