Rotorua

It was rainy and cold in the National Park so I headed for the thermal pools of Rotorua. This city is known for its geo-thermal activity and strong Maori culture.

Photos / videos of "Rotorua":

I spent one evening at a traditional Maori Hangi (slow cooked dinner in the ground). Before dinner, they performed a welcome celebration and then war dances dressed as traditional Maori warriors. This is a picture with one of the Maori warriors. They paint their faces, bulge out their eyes and stick out their tounges to intimiate their enemy. It looked funny at first, but it was also kinda freaky! A steaming mud pool in one of the city parks. Me enjoying the hot pools in a spa overlooking Lake Taupo. Another steaming pool... these pools are very stinky because of the sulfur (smell like rotten eggs). Yuck! This is a silver fern leaf... its the symbol of New Zealand. They are called silver ferns because the undersurface of the fern leaf will glow in the moonlight. A silver fern tree.
