Talacauvery, the birthplace of the Cauvery, stood shrouded in mist even at midday. That combined with the reverence with which the clutch of pilgrims who had turned up went about the place gave it a very mystic atmosphere. As we shivered in the cold, clad as we were in jackets and caps, a priest wearing only a loincloth went about his duties, invoking the blessings of the Cauvery on us.
Talacauvery was about 2 kilometres from Bhagamandala, which was about 35 km from Madikeri.
On the way down, we stopped at the Triveni Sangama, the meeting point of three rivers. When we pointed out that we could see only two rivers, a local said that the third was a mystical and heavenly river, visible only to those with a gnanadhrishti, the vision of wisdom. Our driver Urs, more a man of the world, said that the third was an underground river.
