Jaipur

Text written in: English

After a pleasant 5 hr train ride we arrived in Jaipur, the capital city of Rajastan. The next three days were spent exploring the bazaars and some site seeing to the astrological park - a serious of monuments laid out to measure time and zodiac readings for predicting life events based on birth date (and a necessity for checking whether a potential marriage partner is suitable); The Hawal Mahal - a palace built for the royal harem with lots of peepholes so the women could watch the world go by in the street below (The palace was undergoing a brutish interior paint job which involved slathering white paint over the dirty walls with little regard for carvings, artwork, neat edges, or runs. Given that some of the painters children reverted to begging as we past, the restorations were obviously on a tight budget); And Amber fort - an impressive fortress overlooking the city from the top of a steep hill range that 3/4 encircles the city.

Although there were many other places of interest to visit, the foreigner entry fees and ridiculous policy of charging extra per camera made us selective (Eg: Indians 10 rupees, foreigners 150 rupees, cameras 50 rupees extra or 30c/$5/$2 pp respectively).

Fortunately the food has been fantastic and we've eaten nothing but delicious veggie curries for almost 2 weeks now (interspersed with the odd slice of chocolate cake).
