Iguassu Falls

Text written in: English

An early breakfast of fresh tropical fruit, exotic juices, breads, cheese, cakes and rocket-fuel coffee before starting off on our tour of the Argentinian side of the Iguassu Falls. First stop after passport control (handled by our guide Evelina) was the 3 country (Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil) river junction of the Iguassu and Parana rivers. Next stop: the Argentine Iguassu Falls.

After choosing the whole hog package we head off in a 4WD open top truck through rainforest towards our speedboat tour of the Iguassu Falls. We haven't gone far before the heavens open and we experience our first tropical rain storm of the trip which persists in earnest for the next hour or so. The guide on the truck quickly abandons any attempt at explaining the local ecology and moves us swiftly onto the waiting speedboats... Fortunately, we've all been provided with plastic carrier bags to keep any precious items dry.

The speedboat trip is an entertaining affair: hurtling along rapids and a surging river straight into driving rain before climaxing with a ride into one of the largest of the 275 Iguassu waterfalls. A man with a video camera wrapped in plastic bags at the back at boat is capturing the whole experience and is frequently trying to gee up the boat occupants (DVD is in the post) - Ness has her head lowered like someone suffering from motion sickness and is holding her hat tightly over her eyes for the whole trip (probably not her most favourite of experiences so far)!

After a walk through the national park with more views of the falls in varying levels of rain, we hop on a train to the Devil's Throat walkway which gives an awe-inspiring view of the main part of the Iguassu Falls. We round off the day with an "eco" trip in a rubber boat along the Iguassu river: alligators and toucans on view.

After such a wet day, we needed another a go at the falls. Two days later we went to the Brazilian side of the falls which gave us a different viewpoint and some sun!
