Dragon Cave Rafting

Text written in: English

We spent the day caving today. It was brilliant! We got suited up at the company's headquarters, in polypropylene long johns and shirts with wetsuits overtop. Then we got big woollen socks and gumboots, and caving helmets with lamps. We drove out to the site on a huge 4x4 truck and walked for about half an hour to the cave entrance, where our guide told us a little bit about the Maori history of the cave and warned us about the belief that a spirit of the dead might steal our souls if we didn't show him we were coming in peace by putting a leaf in the bands of our helmet. So we did, though frankly it hasn't really been ascertained that Cat has a soul anyway. We then descended into the cave and spent a couple of hours scrambling over amazing rock formations, wading through rivers, admiring glowworms (yes, more glowworms), and checking out stalactites and stalagmites. We also got a chance to jump off a waterfall -- the water was pretty cold but when else would we have had the chance to jump off a waterfall in a cave, really. Then we got into inner tubes (Matt needed the extra-large tube), turned off the lights on our helmets, and drifted along a black river underneath a ceiling starred with thousands of tiny blue-white glowworm lights. It was awesome.

On the walk to the cave entrance. Just entering the caves. About to set off in the inner tube. About to set off in the inner tube. As we entered the "Love Tunnel" -- the tightest squeezes on the trip. There were a few caves we both thought Matt wouldn't make it through, but he did (after some rather impressive acrobatics) Cave formations. Entering the cave. Cave formations. Glowworms. Finally we can show you what glowworms look like! (This is a long-exposure photo that's been digitally touched up. We got it from the cave rafting company)
