Getting back from Stewart Island was even worse

The winds haven't gotten any better since we got to Stewart Island. Our kiwi-spotting tour was cancelled because it was too windy for the boat to take us out to Mason Bay, and our flight back to Invercargill was indescribably terrifying. Matt has solemnly vowed never to get on a small aircraft again.

We hoped that this rainbow off the coast of Stewart Island as we flew toward Invercargill was an omen that we weren't, in fact, about to die in a horrible burning crash.
