We crossed the Cook Strait to the South Island at three in the morning -- it was the only time we could get a cheap fare for two people and a car. It still cost a stinging hundred and ninety dollars, but at least we made it. We got in to Picton at 6:30 a.m. and, after driving off the ferry, pulled over to figure out where we wanted to go. We promptly fell asleep in the car and slept for almost four hours. When we woke up it was a beautiful day in a town with abundant free parking, so we wandered a bit, sailed little sailboats in a little pond with some locals and two other Canadians, had some breakfast, and then decided to shoot off to Kaikoura.
