The trip from Opotiki to Hicks Bay was a beautiful drive -- we drove along some stunning coastal areas and stopped at some little beaches along the way. At one of the beaches, a little dog came up to greet us as we were meandering along. Cat promptly named him Sheldon and we spent half an hour or so throwing sticks for him and getting him to dig giant holes, which he seemed to quite enjoy. When we tried to get back in the car and head off, Sheldon jumped in too. It took about ten minutes and some deception to get him to stay behind as we took off. Unsurprisingly, Cat was all for keeping him, but he probably wouldn't have liked to be far from the beach -- he needs sand to dig in and sticks to chew on.
Anyway, we stayed at a backpackers that was really just a few rooms on the back of a family's house. The family had lots of cattle and some sheep (as well as another dog, Hector, which Cat also wanted to adopt). The cows were pretty loud at night -- we're not really sure what they were up to, but it was kind of hard to sleep.
