From Hicks Bay we drove to East Cape, the most easterly tip of mainland New Zealand. We climbed up more stairs than I care to think about to get to a lighthouse that may as well have been at the end of the world. The coast plunged with distressing steepness into the crashing surf below us and all we could see was water. It was pretty amazing.
From East Cape we backtracked to Te Araroa and stopped at one of New Zealand's largest pohutukawa. Pohutukawa are beautiful trees with magnificent crimson flowers; they're sometimes called Christmas trees because they flower mainly in December. This particular specimen, called Te Waha o Rerekohu, is reputed to be over 600 years old.
