We stayed at a convent

Text written in: English

The drive to Gisborne was as beautiful as the one to Hicks Bay. Again, beaches and amazing coastal scenery abounded. We also stopped at Tolaga Bay to take a walk on the longest wharf in New Zealand, 660m long, and passed through Whangara, the setting for Witi Ihimaera's The Wale Rider.
In Gisborne we stayed at The Flying Nun Backpackers, a converted convent. Neat.
We didn't spend too much time in Gisborne, but we did stop in at the Te Moana Maritime Museum, where the bridge and captain's cabin of the 12,000-ton ship the Star of Canada have been put on display after being salvaged from a 1912 wreck. We checked out the statue of "Young Nick" (Nicholas Young), Captain Cook's cabin boy and the first to sight New Zealand, and the monument to Captain Cook near the spot where he first set foot on NZ in 1769.

The convent we stayed in. Kind of fun. Matt at the helm of the Star of Canada. Captain James Cook, in all his proud finery. "Young Nick," Cook's cabin boy and the first European to spot New Zealand. This totem pole was given to Gisborne by Canada. We have no idea why.
