After white-water rafting, the shuttle bus driver very kindly dropped us off right at Hell's Gate (we'd asked him to drop us off somewhere within hitchhiking distance). Hell's Gate smelled awful, but it was filled with plopping mud and steaming vents and boiling pools. Highlights included Hurutini, a bubbling pool named after a Maori princess who had an abusive husband and who killed herself by jumping into this pool, the Inferno (which according to the latest geological survey varies from 100 C to 115 C and is between two and seven metres deep), the mud volcanoes with their plopping mud, and the Kakahi falls (the largest hot thermal falls in the southern hemisphere, with an average temperature of 38 C).
