Diving at Goat Island

Text written in: English

Scuba diving was fun. We spent our first day diving with Grant and Nikki (our instructors) and two Calgarians. The second day it was just the four of us. We saw huge rays (Grant touched several of them, but we weren't about to mess with stingrays), schools of maomao, weird-looking sponges, fish that looked like gigantic versions of Cat's old vicarious pet Hans, snappers, and all kinds of other fish we couldn't name if you paid us.
We also had an adventure with a duck family. Mama, Papa and Baby Duck were hanging out with us for a while as we dried off between dives. Mama and Papa wandered off after a bit, and then five minutes later, suddenly Baby realized he was by himself. He dashed off, peeping wildly. Cat was watching him, and suddenly he disappeared and the peeping stopped. He'd fallen down a storm drain. Getting him out was a tricky business, since we didn't want him to run away further into the pipe, but after Grant and Matt hauled the drain cover off, Nikki clambered in, lifted him out and sent him on his way. He found his mum, who had gotten into the water, but he was on a wall about five feet higher than she was. How do you tell a duckling that he could just waddle around the wall? He jumped. Or maybe fell. We're not sure, but we know his head got a good clonk on the way down. But the story ends happily, since he was reuinited with his family at last.

Ready to head into the water. Cat, of course, was cold and thus elected to wear a hood. Duck family The duckling who later fell into the storm drain. Duck family. Ducky mum looking for her duckling, who has fallen into the storm drain. The scene of the crime. Duckling happily reunited with ducky mum. Moo. Very ugly grunty pig we saw on the way to the waterfront. Cat visiting her favourite NZ tree, the pohutukawa. You can't really tell from this photo, but most of the branches on this tree held at least one bird. Matt admiring the scenery. The reflection of sunset at the beach. Goat island. The beach. Cat on a branch of the huge, beautiful tree we clambered over to get to the other side of the beach.
