Malaysia Airlines rules! They cancelled our Vienna-Kuala Lumpur-Auckland flight and replaced it with a Vienna-Frankfurt-Kuala Lumpur-Auckland flight, resulting in our having to sleep at the airport so we could be there bright and early to fly out at seven a.m. To make up for this inconvenience, they gave us a day-use hotel room for our 14-hour (originally 12-hour) layover in Kuala Lumpur. We got free transportation to and from the airport and two meals thrown in as well.
So we were expecting a Holiday Inn or somesuch. No, no. Malaysian apparently doesn't do things that way. Our hotel was the Allson Klana resort, with swaying palm trees, manicured grounds, an immense lagoon-shaped pool, and a fountain in the lobby. We had a balcony! Our first meal was an all-you-can-eat buffet of all kinds of European, Malaysian, Japanese, and other foods. One of our measures of how fancy a place is is how many plates Matt has to consume before they start looking him strangely. Here they didn't bat an eye, even after he piled a plate so high with pineapple slices that he actually burned his mouth eating them (from the acid).
We took a cab (cabs are cheap in Malaysia!) into town and Cat got a new mp3 player at last, for not too much cash. Same model as her old one. We also saw lots of pirated software and CD stores and went through a crisis debating whether we'd get caught cramming our luggage full of all this stuff to take home to Canada. We decided it wasn't worth the risk, but left with much sighing and shaking of heads.
