Well, we'd lost Will and were hankering once again to see a familiar face. We got one in Graz. Cat has a friend, Todd, who's teaching English in southern Austria, so we arranged to meet him there. We went out for lunch with him (he speaks German, making ordering considerably easier than usual), and spent some time wandering around an Austrian bookstore (Todd bought The Picture of Dorian Grey, if you were wondering) but unfortunately he had commitments in Villach so we were left on our own again.
The first thing the next day we did was a train ride through a mountain, filled with scenes from fairy tales. It was pretty hoakey, but kind of fun. The guide only spoke German, so we didn't know what half the scenes were supposed to be. Some of them looked like they might have some very interesting stories connected to them.
Since it was elected cultural capital of Europe in 2003, Graz has been doing a lot of culture-related things to boost its reputation even further. One of these things was an attempt to photograph 2003 people in one day. There was a tent set up on the main square where you could get your picture taken for free if you let them put it in their exhibition later. So next time you're in Graz, look for our pictures in some museum somewhere. We also saw a little hut in the middle of a square, put up by some municipal arts fund, that contained a fountain with really awful music and video of two old women dangling their feet in a pool. We're glad we're not Graz taxpayers.
