The trouble with fortresses...

Text written in: English

is that they're always at the tops of gigantic hills. The fortress of Hohenwerfen is no exception. It took about an hour of very vertical walking to get there from the train station. When we finally got up there, though, the entry price included a tour of the dugeon and armoury, and a falconry show in the yard. The show had 8 birds, including a bald eagle, that flew over the yard and swooped close enough to us that it was kind of scary.
