Pai is up in the cool highlands of northern Thailand and is nestled in a lovely wide valley with steep forested mountains on all sides. The drive up there is amazing, the road weaving its way along high ridges overlooking forested valleys and rivers. It's a really hippy hangout, so you come here if you want to get stoned or pierced or tattooed, though you can do all those things pretty much everywhere in Thailand too. It's a really nice place though. There's a street market in the town where you buy all sorts of great cheap Thai food from stalls. The Thais really like their street food; you're never more than a few metres from someone selling something hot and tasty. You can also go hiking in the surrounding hills, or elephant riding. I only had one day here so i just hired a motorbike and explored out into the countryside where there are hot springs and waterfalls and some Buddhist temples up in the hills with great views over the valley. It's a nice place and probably the last chance i'll get to have a bit of cool weather. It's all hot from here on!
