All aboard the Pedro Martin II

Text written in: English

The Pedro Martin II was our liferaft going up the Río Ucayali towards Iquitos.  It was a bigger boat than I had initally saw when I first went down to the port to check on departure times, etc., but it was also more comfortable because there were several levels and you could move around the boat with ease.  All in all, the trip took about 3 1/2 days to get to Iquitos.....we left around 6:30pm last Saturday evening and arrived in Iquitos at 2:30am Wednesday morning.  There were plenty of opportunities for photos and video during the trip....along with the 4 hours that we got stuck in shallow water.  One of the most memorable parts of the voyage was going through the point where the Río Ucayali meets the Río Marañón to form the Río Amazon.  However, the only photos that I have of that are in my mind, it was just after dusk when we passed through and the lighting would not have provided a good photo anyway.  There are somethings that you just have to be there for.....

Just getting my hamaca strung up for the 4 day trip. Julio and his girlfriend Jenny came to the port to see me off. The upper sleeping level on the boat, equiped with a ¨restaurant¨ and cheesy japanese comedies dubbed into spanish. Day 2, Sunday, clear sailing Our little scout boat that made the trip alongside the main ship Pulling into the port in Contamana, Day 2 This gives you an idea of how big the Pedro Martin II is....yes that is a small bus on the front deck. First sighting of the Clemson flag that I brought with me to Peru. I got one of the kids on board to hold it while I ran up the dock to get a picture. Brother and sister gang on board. I gave him a sucker for holding the flag for me, but his sister took it away and wouldn´t give it to anyone :-) Very curious and inteligent was this 3 year old. One of the logging boats that we passed on the river. One of the small comunities that we passed along the way Locals down by the water Sunset on the Ucayali otra vista Another one of the adventurous kids onboard They like climbing At one of the ports that we stopped at, these kids came aboard and were trying to sell us this animal that they catched. No...I didn´t buy it Noella and Anke, from Peru and Germany respectively Our position for nearly 4 hours on Monday afternoon. We were stuck in the low water near the shore and the tiny scout boat went back and forth up and down the boat trying to push it out......finally we got going again Smooth sailing straight ahead Sunrise at the port in Iquitos
