Brno
Another town with a nice town centre, grotty railway station. Did as
close to a forestry pilgrimage as we are going to get, visiting the
Abbey where Gregor Mendel did his work on Genetics with peas and bees,
and pretty much did the ground work for modern genetics. 5th form
science anyone?
Had a awesome Czech meal at Hotel Pegus which is a busy pub down a back
street in Brno, where we also stayed. I am a saurkraut, dumpling and
goulash convert, especially now the weather has gotten rather chilly.
The service was great, atmosphere great, food great.
Everybody over 25 should remember Bata Bullet shoes, so here a good
story. There is a chain of shoe stores here called Bata, and it turns
out the Bata family were well known shoe makers in Czech , before they
left the country sometime after, or during the 1940s, going to Canada.
They then made their millions selling velco strap sneakers to kids
during the 80s, apparently they sold 50 million shoes a year at their
peak!
From there, visited Telc where they have an entire square that dates
from the 16th Century, and is gorgeous. Carp fish are also a big
thing here, and all the towns have ponds for farming them that date
from medieval times. At Christmas people go and buy a fish and put it
in their bathtub until the big day!
