In the Mekong Delta

Text written in: English

Hi all,

Have just spent a very interesting 3 days in the Mekong Delta - a river that flows through Tibet, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam before emptying into the South China Sea. We visited lots of local producers, including a place that makes rice paper. This is a bit like the stuff you get with dim sum, but almost cobweb thin. They use it for lots of things from spring rolls, to an edible wrapping around sweets and biscuits. It's a very delicate process removing it from the steamer without tearing it, but the women use a practiced technique - and apparantly can make 800 - 1000 a day! We also visited a 'pop rice' factory (i.e. like popcorn), a vermicelli factory and biked around a small island. On day two we visited a floating market, a rice processing plant and a crocodile (or 'rockodie' as our guide pronounced it) farm. Actually a bit grim as they enclosures where overcrowded and they all get shipped of to china to be made into handbags and aphrodisiacs.

Today we caught a (loooooooong) boat over the border into Cambodia and are now in the capital, Phnom Penh.
