Salvador (29 March - 31 March 2004)

The two full days I spent in Salvador where filled with visiting too many Baroque churches and just one dissapointing museum. The Catedral Basilica is indeed Salvadors most beautiful and built between 1657 and 1672. Very old ceilings with fabulous paintings and decorations. The Museu Afro-Brasileiro displays art and Candomble apparel and shows where all the slaves came from in Africa. Lots from Central African counries like Zaire.

The views from Praca da Se and Praca Castro Alves over the lower city and the bay with all the boats and an old circular fort is great especially at sunset. The upper and lower city are connected with two different modes of transport. One lift, the Elevador Lacerda, that gets you up or down in about 15 seconds and transports about 50.000 people per day (!!!) and the other one is the Plano Inclinao Goncalves, which is nothing more than a small tram wagon, almost identical to the ones in Valparaiso, Chile, although the one in Salvador is brand new, despite the fact that there had ben one since 1889. Both cost R 0.05 and for that you even get a modern ticket with magnetic strip which you have to put in an automatic turnstile of the type you find in metro stations.

The lower city does not have much to offer. Apart from a stroll along the water the only interesting thing is the Mercado Modelo, a tourist market with lots of junk, but also many good pieces of arts, including African style masks, paintings and wood carvings. A few restaurants with good views over the water make it a good place to hang out a few hours.
