Your intrepid traveller was still weakened by the evil forces of Bali Belly stomach trouble, so the first day consisted of lying in bed in my hotel, getting some work done on my laptop and drinking their overpriced water (SGD dollars $7.50 for two bottles).
The hotel charged S$0.30 a minute for the use of the broadband connection (via an ethernet cable you can plug into your laptop), with a ceiling of S$25 a day for more than 90 minutes. I managed to use it for two days for $2.40 and didn't quibble when the bill came at almost S$50 cheaper than it should have been. I also plugged my wireless router into the plug so that I wasn't so cable-bound. Theoretically this would allow other guests with wireless to share the connection and avoid charges. None, however, connected.
Eventually, I got the strength together to go for a wander down the road my hotel was on - Orchard Road - which is reputed to be one of the better shopping areas. It was pretty - pretty average.
I spoke to Stephan, who's a friend of Tom's from Paris and used to work with him at Fullsix.com, and also to Emma, who I hadn't seen since Lord Howe Island, and met up with Iman, intending on a trip to Little India and a night safari, but ended up checking out a couple of local bars instead as it all started a bit late.
Summary of bars: not bad, a bit pricey and pretentious considering how little was going on, but it was a Wednesday. There's an awesome chill bar whose name I've forgotten (but most post in here) which has ambient lighting and projected 3D landscapes to soothe the eye.
On the whole, Singapore has some beautiful colonial architecture and gardens, but there isn't a hell of a lot going on. It could easily be a small slice of Sydney or anywhere in the west, except that the population is almost entirely asian. Everything is very orderly, and regulated. The bar people remind you politely but firmly that photos are not allowed, pedestrian crossings show the number of seconds you have left to cross, and selling chewing gum is illegal.
