Our flight from Amman (Queen Aila Airport) to London Heathrow (Terminal 1) was uneventful. I have only one complaint and that of course is that the flight was not long enough. We left the ground at Amman around 0840hrs (local time).
We occupied the bulkhead seats at the front of the aircraft (business section). Each seat had its own TV, which was pulled up from under the seat and have numerous films to view. The films all started at the same time so it was not quite the interactive service on offer say from Singapore Airlines but there were sufficient movies and children’s programmes for our needs. The kids sat together except at meal times when they were split up so the adults could devour the left overs (there were very little).
I watched a film starring Matt Damon, based upon the early days in Bagdad after the American ‘victory’ over Saddam Husein. This was followed by ‘Live and Let Die’ (James Bond 1970’s – Roger Moore). The seats on business class very very spacious but of course I was more interested in the food and liquid refreshments. It took me a while to figure out that part of the menu was in Ethiopian as our flight would appear to originate in Addis Ababa. Anyway after a light breakfast (fresh fruit permitted) we moved onto grilled chicken kebab and fillet of beef with spinach stuffed tomato.
The most interesting part of the flight concerned the range of refreshments. Starting with a glass of Champagne Charles Lafitte Grande Cuvee Brut I moved through the business class wine selection (red), including Aulente San Patrignano Rosso.
“San Patrignano is a community that was founded in 1978 by Vincenzo Muccioli and has since welcomed over 18,000 young men and women with serious drug problems and offers them a home and opportunity to study, learn a trade and change their lives...”
The French offering was Chateau Mayne Vieil Fronsac.
“Fronsac, along with Pomerol and St Emilion, are just some of the wonderful wines produced in the Libournais area of France. When you dive into the aroma of this smooth, classic wine, the powerful leather and tobacco scent are reminiscent of a gentleman’s club...”
Well this can’t be the Royal Scots Club because the no smoking ban has been in place for a number of years! Anyway my favourite wine was the Australian offering – Shiraz Brokenback Tyrells, which had a slightly sweet taste.
Staff were very good to the children en route, keeping them topped up with orange juice and treats. I just hope they don’t expect business class on every flight from now on!
We arrived in London slightly ahead of schedule at 1150hrs. We were first out of the aircraft and sped through immigration and customs, heading straight for the BMI Arrivals Lounge, which allows access until 1230hrs and closes at 1400hrs. It is geared towards overnight flights and provides an English cooked breakfast, showers, internet access, newspapers etc. Ailsa was so pleased just to munch on an apple. Personally the cooked breakfast was a rare treat after so long in Turkey, Israel & Jordan, where pork products are almost impossible to find.
So this is where we are now, loafing about in the Arrivals Lounge. We have been the only occupants since our arrival and staff are busy tidying up to close but we will not leave until around 1350hrs. Next we will have to head back through security and find another BMI Business Lounge before our afternoon flight to Belfast.
