Another bad night sleep, I think its the noises that freak me out along with the long walk to the bathroom! Relaxing is on the agenda today so its all good really. The sun is shining and we sit in it, content. The sunbathing is nice but we both get quite red quite quickly, due to the doxycycline (antibiotic) which we're both taking as an antimalarial. It's supposed to increase sun-sensitivity, and it does, but later this seems to ease off.
Breakfast is one of the best yet! Mexican eggs (scrambled eggs, spice, onion and tomato), homemade bread toasted, guacamole and chilli sauce with a pretty darn good coffee. Life is pretty good with a full belly and sunshine!
Feeling suitably relaxed we decide to head back to Antiqua and start the next leg of our adventure to the Caves of Lanquin and the cascading pools of Semuc Champey. We have a lunch of pineapple licuado (like a smoothie with ice) for me and tuna salad for Joe at the hostel.
There is a minor period of kerfuffle and panic when one of the locals who obviously runs a private shuttle boat (Q70) tries to tell us that the public boat (Q15) is going to be ages and we'll miss our shuttle. We ignore him and five minutes later the normal public boat taxi to Panajachel where we can get the shuttle to Antigua. I needed to eat by this point now so we stopped at a comedor. I had homemade lemonade, meat, guacamole, chips and hot salsa..perfect! We get the shuttle back with an annoying American family with a VERY loud child... It felt like the longest trip ever.
When we arrived in Antiqua is didnt get any better. We were faced with the most mingly dark hostel yet... Hostel Umma Gumma (named after the Pink Floyd album)...not nice. We should have just walked around the corner and chosen from any of the others, but we just went for it. Umma Gumma was dirty, noisy, dark, badly decorated, badly furnished (our room had a cabinet that looked like it should display coffins), no breakfast included, nasty toilets, no lamps, suspected bed bugs (another guest) and a stolen wallet (not mine but another guest). The only redeeming feature a great recommendation for where to eat for dinner. After dumping our stuff we head out to have dinner.
Dinner was at the 'El Típico Antigueño' - good service, local delicious food and locals eating. We have beer (very important to wash down the doxycycline antimalarial and to soften the thought of goign back to the hostel) and to eat for me a thick warming soup packed with meat and potatoes (meat falling apart with every bite) and Joe a beef steak ('lomito') rice, chips and salad. Feeling stuffed and with a beer halo on we walk back to the hostel. I didn;t even want get under the sheets so minging. As you can tell i'm not a fan of Ummagumma!
