Leaving Ubud I then traveled east to explore some of the other sights and temples in the area. First I got to Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave), which is a small cave in a cliff face with various items in it, dating to the 11th century. The area is in what was forest and had been lost to everyone until found in 1923 by the Dutch. Then I went around to Yeh Pulu which is a 25 meter long craved cliff face it has various scenes on it from everyday life on it. It is unkown the meaning of this walll.
After I went up into the mountains to a place called Gunung Kawi, where in the bottom of a lush green valley, is one of Bali's oldest monuments, this consits of 10 rock-cut shrines cut out of the rock face in imitation of actual statues. Each is believed to be a memorial to a member of 11th century Balinese royalty, but little is known for certain.
Then I visited Pura Penataran Sasih which is a temple with a huge bronze drum known as the Moon of Pejeng, which was damaged in an earthquake. The drum is more than 2 meters long and is the largest single-piece cast drum in the world. It is believed to be between 1000 and 2000 years old, and is unkown where it was made. I had a local guide me around the temple who explained all about the buildings and the different shrines and what they meant and who used the different ones.
After this I headed back to Kuta to find acommdation for over the Christmas period, getting lost again in Denpasar going around in circles a couple of times.
