French Fries are Chips and ...

Text written in: English

My friend Mike was waiting for me outside the secured area as agreed, and after removing my pack from it's travel cover and repacking slightly, off we went on the Underground. It took about an hour to get to the station nearest Mike's flat (apartment) at London Bridge. We walked a few blocks to his place where I was able to drop my gear. After sitting around for about 5 minutes and realizing I could barely keep my eyes open, we decided to go for a walk and find something to eat.

We headed for the Thames river where we found some food and headed down to a park on the river near Tower Bridge. We took the obligatory tourist photos, then headed west along the south bank of the river. The central area of London is highly congested with touristy places all close together, so we passed numerous of the well known landmarks including The London Tower and the Tower Bridge, London Eye, Tate Modern Art Museum, Shakespeare's Globe, Royal National Theatre and so on. We stopped for a drink at one point as my feet and shoes were not happy and were letting me know that. We continued on to Westminster Bridge which we crossed to see the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey and Big Ben (well, not really - Big Ben is actually the bell inside the tower that you can't see, not the clock).

We continued on inland and headed up Whitehall were we passed numerous federal government buildings, passed Downing St where the British PM and the Exchequer of the Treasury live and on to Trafalgar square, which was quite busy - a huge screen was up with BBC coverage of the Olympics going on. We wandered over to Canada House (ie the Canadian Embassy), then moved on down the Strand, passing the London Dungeon (basically a year round, very popular haunted house) until we got to the road leading to Waterloo bridge which we crossed back over to the south side of the river. We passed a huge Imax in the centre of a traffic circle and head back inland to Mike's. We stopped at a couple pubs along the way trying to find something to eat. It seems that a lot of pubs shut down serving food around 6pm, though some are later and we were having a hard time finding food. We did find one, but it had a limited menu and were out of what we wanted, so we had a drink and then moved on. We did find another one eventually that served until 10pm and we had supper. After, we headed back to Mike's and my eyes got very heavy again and I didn't last long and went to bed early. All in all, Mike figured we walked about 5-6 miles - not bad for someone having a hard time staying awake earlier.

QOTD (Question of the Day): Why do so many "English" Pubs only serve Thai food?
