After a delicious breakfast of porridge, we set off for Cambridge to meet Bee and Chris. It was about a half hour drive, plus we hit some traffic on the way into town that we later learned was caused by Freshers week (lots of people walking around town with microwaves etc).
We managed to get into the centre of the old part of Cambridge, found Bee and Chris and headed to a pub for a huge lunch (I recommend steak and kidney pudding!). It was great to catch up with them and hear what everyone's been up to recently.
Once lunch was done we headed towards Great St Mary's church. You can climb the tower for great views of the colleges, town and the surrounding countryside, and on the way up you can see into the belfry, on which is a sign reading "Going past this point invites certain death".
Once at the bottom again we headed across the way to King's College, but it was closed to visitors. We did notice however that Evensong was at 5:30 so we decided to return then. As we walked north along the road past other colleges we realised that all the colleges were closed early because of the start of Freshers' Week. We did manage to go into St John's for a sneaky look around (well the door was open and there was no-one to stop people!). We headed all the way through the college and out to the backs before heading back towards Kings College.
The call to Evensong was rung at 5:15 as we lined up with other tourists to get into the chapel. The chapel itself is surrounded with beautiful stained glass windows, which were lit up like fire in the fading sunset. The organ played an amazing voluntary as we all filed in and took our seats (big churches have such brilliant acoustics) and once the organ stopped, the choir began to sing. It was so beautiful! Very difficult to describe, but absolutely amazing. So my next wish is to hear Evensong in a cathedral, because that may be even more amazing than Kings College chapel!
For dinner we went to a Thai resturant that do a buffet on Saturday nights - all-you-can-eat Thai is pretty amazing too ;)
