Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew

Text written in: English

This morning was another beautiful day, and we thought it might be a nice day to check out the Royal Botanic Gardens. Margarite and Peter had season tickets, so we borrowed them and got in for free so that was good :)

The gardens cover a huge area and were first founded in 1750s, next to the grounds of Kew Palace. The palace is now part of the gardens, but is closed at the moment for refurbishment.

Basically we wandered around almost the whole of the gardens, and now we know what the types of trees we have been seeing around the place are - oaks, ash, maple, beech, cedar, holly... we can't wait to see what autumn is like! The gardens would be a very peaceful place and lovely for a relaxing picnic, if it wasn't for the constant stream of planes just about to land flying overhead. Noisy!

The day started quite pleasant and sunny, but gradually started to cloud over until it started raining quite heavily - fortunately we had our rain jackets but our pants were soaked! The temperature also dropped rapidly so we were actually blowing steam! I have never been so cold during summer before :) Anyway not long after the rain finished, the sun was out again to dry us out a bit.

By about 2 we were quite hungry but hadn't really seen anywhere in the gardens we wanted to eat lunch, so we left and walked back into Richmond and went to the Pitcher and Piano, a rather trendy bar on the waterfront. While we were eating it started raining again quite heavily, and didn't look like stopping after a couple more drinks, so we donned our wet weather gear again and hurried the 5 mins home in the pouring rain, getting totally soaked and chilled again. Of course, 5 mins after we got home the rain stopped. But we were soon warm and dry again.
