From Waitiki Landing we drove south to the lower end of 90 Mile Beach at Wharakauri to walk along the sands. The tide was in so there was no traffic or anyone else on the windswept expanse of sand that curved off into the distance. This is usually the main access point to the beach for the organised tours that ferry people up to the Cape but due to the recent rains and storms most of the access ramp had been washed away. Back on the road we visited the small town of Ahipara where we stopped for a lovely coffee and some awesome raspberry, cream cheese and white chocolate muffins. Ahipara is home to some towering dunes that we tried to reach but could not find, we think that they can only be reached by an organised tour. So we left and drove on towards the picturesque village of Kohukohu that was once a thriving town at the heart of the region’s kauri industry. It used to have a sawmill, shipyard, two newspapers and banks but today it is a quiet backwater on the north side of the lovely Hokianga Harbour. We stayed the night at a really nice backpackers hostel that had some power sites for campers, called Kohukohu Tree House www.treehouse.co.nz.
It was set amongst exotic fruit and nut trees and very well hidden from the road. We had use of all the facilities in the house which were very nice and we spent the afternoon sprawled out on bean bags reading and relaxing and enjoying the peace and quiet as we were the only guests till someone joined us later in the evening. It was great to spend a few hours doing nothing and winding down after all the to-ing and fro-ing of the past two months. I walked up to a lookout point that gave good views across the harbour to pretty Rawene as the sun was setting before catching up on emails.
