Bienvenidos a Peru

Text written in: English (US)

Only in Peru one day and already we have had many adventures. It started when we landed, got our bags and went outside to find a taxi. That mission accomplished, we sat down, ready to relax for the ride. Not so fast. First our driver told us to put our purses on the ground beneath our feet because it is common for robbers to break windows at stoplights and grab them. Welcome to Peru! This didn't prevent him from rolling up his own window, however, which I am sure he regretted. We took off and were driving through city streets when two 20 something guys jumped out in the road, holding cups. He stopped to avoid hitting him, and one through his cup of beer - this is at 10:00 am - at him, wetting the driver and splashing me. Nothing like the smell of beer to wake a girl up.

We arrive at our hostel safe and sound, all ready to check in, shower, and perhaps nap. Not so fast. It didn't even cross our minds that we couldn't check in at 10:30 in the morning. Instead, we locked up our bags and were set loose on the town. We are not staying in Lima proper, but a suburb type thing called Miraflores where most travelers stay. It is apparently safer than the city itself, what with its window-smashing robbers. It is a very pretty area on the Pacific Ocean with some interesting things to see.  We also decided to take a break from being tourists and saw a movie. It made me forget I was in Peru!

Finally we made it back to the hostel to check in. Some mix-up had us in a 6 bed dorm instead of a private room. Not the end of the world and all the beds weren't even full - yet. Sometime in the night 2 guys (with the biggest backpacks I have ever seen. Seriously. A small to mid-sized child could have easily fit in them) arrived, got settled (loudly) and went to sleep. And then started snoring. I was miserable. I shook the offender, kicked his mattress (he was on the bunk above me) but to no avail. He was deeply asleep, enjoying his snoring. I think I finally drifted off around 3:00 am just to wake up again before 7:00 to the man stench that was the room. We got ready quickly and left. Good riddance.

Our one day in Lima done, we are now off to catch a bus to the cities of Ica/Huacachina for wine tasting and sandboarding. Thankfully we will be out of the mountains for a little while loner and stay on the warm and sunny coast.
