chiang mai

Text written in: English

We arrived in Chiang Mai in the early morning after travelling through the night on a sleeper train. We didn't get much sleep as the train tried it's hardest to de-rail itself and the beds were made for a small child. This meant I was ok but it was funny watching Mike trying to scramble into it. We met some guy on the platform who was taking us to a hostel we heard was ok. He was a nice guy with a crap hair, he had some rat tail thing going on. We have also noticed that in Asia many men have moles with hair growing out of them but this hair is long! We've decided there's some kind of competition going on which we don't know about, bunch of jokers!

As we had arrived so early we decided to make the most of the day so we went to bed. I lie we walked about the city to get our bearings, it's pretty small with lots more temples to go and look at. The temples are beautiful but after seeing god knows how many they get boring so we don't want to see any more for a long while. We found a nice place to eat for about 30p, really good noodle soup and went there most days because we're cheap arses. We looked around the local park which looks quite big on the map but is infact tiny right next to the main road, so nice breath of fresh smog! After a few days of walking into bars and drinking we decided to take a look at the surrounding jungle with a trek. We drove about an hour and a half outside of Chiang Mai and it was good to get out of the city. We did a short trek to a water fall where we could cool down as it was boiling! After a bit of lunch we went on to do a bit of elephant riding. This sounded quality until I had to sit on it's head trying to keep my balance, Mike got the nice chair on it's back although he looked like he was having trouble as well. We also did a bit of white water rafting which turned out to be a gentle row down a shallow river as it's the dry season, was still nice to look around though. In the evenings we went to the night bazaar which is pretty much a market like any other we've been to which sells the same old rubbish, dead things in glass boxes, things that are locally made but seem to make it to every other market, so look forward to some good presents Lorna and Dee!. We decided to get away from the tourists and went to the local Irish Pub (O'Malleys), don't judge us! We met two drunk English guys who we took advantage of and won money playing pool, a whole 100baht. After a few more days lazing in bars we decided it was time to make the journey North towards Chiang Khong and into Laos
