We sat on our allocated seats for an effortless journey to Udaipur. The seats were comfy and despite numerous stops we got to Udaipur on schedule. The scenery was remarkably different to any we had seen elsewhere. The countryside may well have been anywhere in the north of England except for women working in the fields in their saries. Well, it could have been on the outskirts of Bradford where there are so many Indians. Being a non-air conditioned bus, we had ample opportunity to take photos.
The bond film, Octopussy was filmed here. Just as you would find Leonardo Di Caprio's The Beach being shown every night in the island bars of Thailand, Octopussy is shown here at various bars and restaurants.
Udaipur must be the most well equipped for tourists in India. There were many one stop shops for all the travellers' needs. This is in comparison to most places where all you could get was tatty souvenirs and a slow internet.
We went on the roof of the nearby Natural View restaurant to see the sunset and the beautifully lit City Palace hotel sitting proudly in the middle of the lake Pichola. The mango juices of this place were recommended to us by a fellow traveller - Thomas Woodleif. Far away in the distance on a mountain top was the monsoon Palace - Sajjan Garh.

We sorted out our rail tickets next morning and on our return there was a power cut. We took a walk around the town to the nearby Jagdish temple followed by a walk around the mostly dried out Lake Pichola. We were then confronted by an out of control elephant which was annoyed by a small herd water buffalo. It charged towards us with its trunk in the air as we sat and filmed it. It then decided to run in another direction. The City palace hotel looked very good close up, in all its colonial glory. A big thunder storm was brewing and we headed back to the hotel.
In the afternoon, we went on an autorickshaw to the Monsoon palace at the top of a huge hill outside the city. The palace is inside a big national park with tigers among other animals. I was thinking may be it was unwise to be in an open rickshaw going up a hill at less than 10mph with tigers roaming. I took comfort in knowing that the music blaring out of the ten inch speakers of the rickshaw was bad enough to scare any animal.
The palace was just a shell in a bad state of decay. Very few people ever came here and that may well be the case till they renovate it. On our return to the city, we had a couple of CDs cut before making our way to the train station.
