Otago Rail Trail

Text written in: English

The Otago Central Rail Trail stretches for 150km through the ruggedly beautiful countryside of Central Otago.  Starting in Clyde the trail follows a disused railway line all the way to Middlemarch passing over several impressive railway bridges , through tunnels and gorges. I was game for the challenge and made a rather hasty decision to complete the trail over a weekend rather than the four days most sensible people take.  But despite my burning thighs the diverse scenery, great weather and fantastic hospitality resulted in a thoroughly enjoyable weekend.  After cycling 85km the second day I felt I could justify a second ( and third) helping of all the delicious homemade deserts at the Hyde Hotel – the best Banofee Pie I’ve ever tasted…..with a big dollop of homemade ice cream on the side....cycling rocks!
