extravagant, traditional, sparkling, exploding stomach.
just some of the words i would use to describe the Indian wedding we attended today. Nishit, the groom, was a CAPAsia and Ball State student a while back. So when Nihal told him we were coming, he invited all 20 of us to share with him his special day.
My guess is that this wedding was not typical
For one, the family is from a upper middle-class. You could tell from just the location of the wedding. It was held in the Sun-N-Sand hotel where Bollywood used to prance around, located on Juhu Beach.
We arrived at 3:00 for the Turbin ceremony where the groom and his special male guests would receive turbins. And in true asian fashion, he was late. The turbin ceremony lasted about an hour, after which we went outside to an awaiting white horse, lead by a 10 man brass band and drums. Nishit mounted the horse, the band blarred, and the guests danced to the hotel, where the bride was waiting. It took us 2 hours to go about 200 feet on a narrow road. Dancing. The whole way.
Then came the actual religious ceremony, where only about 25 of the 300 guests were actually paying attention. Granted it was a long ceremony, held in a little canopy of fresh threaded flowers, in a little corner of the room, in Hindi. Then came the food. Oh the glorious food. buffett. jesus
by this time, it was 10pm, and then the open bar opened up. and all the men at the party, plus the 8 american girls from ball state, flocked to it. and it was glorious. from then on, it was just a sparkling blur of sarrees, rice, and camera flashes. glorious.
