So that's it. Summer of Service is over. Wow. Everyone's come back from spike yesterday and this place is no longer ours. Sad day. I absolutely loved it. It was amazing working with the kids and I definitely want to do something like this in the future. I miss my babies! I had a great group - Yay Rain 1! I feel like those three weeks they were here were WAY more than three weeks, but at the same time it flew by. A highlight was def the camping trip that we took them on. We camped for 2 nights and on the day we were there we did a challenge low ropes course. Our group did amazing. I was so proud of them! One of the kids in my group was like "Risa you sound like my mom!" I asked him why and he said because I told my team that I was proud of them! Haha it was cute. They worked great together and got to do a lot of really neat activities and accomplish them cooperatively and efficiently. It was awesome!
Graduation for them was cute. A few of them spoke (including one of the guys in my group) and then there was slideshow. It was refreshing watching all of them be excited about getting into the community and working with the elderly or with kids or even just cleaning up local parks. I could really feel the change that some of these kids felt, which was good. I'm really glad I was a part of that! My group had a great energy about them, which I just loved. I never really felt like 'uhh I have to be with these kids again' I was always excited. Even on my days less on when I saw them, it was great! I met some of my kids' families during graduation which was pretty neat too. It was fun!
The other Crew Leaders were fantastic too. We had a lot of jokes and definitely kept each other sane at points haha. I don't think there could have been a better all around group of crew leaders this summer. We all pretty much got along really well - on the worksite and off. They are all great! I'm gonna miss them next round (even though I am excited to get back on Fire 3). There is this thing called the PARC model for Service Learning. Preparation - Action - Reflection - Celebration. We def have been taking full advantage of the "C" part after our normal hour work days and even some days off! :-D
It was really strange when everyone was coming back yesterday. There were a couple teams that had come back earlier in the week (coming back from disaster and stuff). The whole summer it would say CL On Call and then one of our phones numbers and now it's back to TL On Call. Everything is getting back to "normal" and I liked it the way it was! It's almost as if we weren't here with the kids this summer. Campus seemed very different with yellow-shirted 14-17 year olds running around rather than 18-24 year olds. I wonder how it's gonna be back on my team when I won't be making decisions and won't have to be telling other people what to do and to tuck in their shirt, etc. Less tiring probably! Maybe working 8 hours a day instead of 16 hours a day will have something to do with that too.
Well, anyway, transition week starts tomorrow and we have a debrief, corps photo, and brief time for our final project. It will def be a lax week. Sadly though, since Denver campus is switching from Winter to Fall, there are a bunch of peeps who are gonna be TL (team leaders) next year. So, they won't be with us 4th round! They are gonna have their training which we're on spike. A bunch of them are leaving on Tuesday!!! Including 5 from SOS. :-( I seriously can't believe we are at this point already. WOW
