Summer Break: MUCH NEEDED. I had a great time at home. I did nearly everything that I wanted to have done and saw nearly everyone I wanted to see! Yay! Even though I do love AmeriCorps, it was also good to have a break. To be home, do nothing, get rid of my AmeriTan, you know. haha. Got to go to a Yankee game which was great (could have been greater had they won, but hey what can ya do?). Went to the beach a bit, got to see Erica for a tiny bit :-), played MadGab and Apples to Apples much more than was necessary lol. It was fun hangin out with my family and my friends from school and my friends from home and just being in Long Beach in general and riding my bike everywhere. Now, back to the fake real world, I guess.
We had a community meeting on the Monday that we got back in Denver and then did nothing the rest of the day. Everyone then left on Tuesday morning for their 3rd round spikes. Everyone on my team is gonna be in the Gulf again! It's gonna be so hot there I do not envy them. One of the people I met in NOLA said that in the summer the only breeze you get in the summer is if you stand on a main street and wait for a bus to go by. And here I am in Denver with a beautiful dry summer breeze (a wireless spot was found on campus! on the steps of walsh hall....i have no idea....). I miss everyone but I'm glad I'm not on the Gulf Coast. The last week or so, the 30 of us who are Summer of Service (SOS...coincidence? i think not...) Crew Leaders have been here training. For the most part, I enjoyed them, because they focused on adolescent development, which I am obviously interested in. It's strange being on campus with not many people here! It's quiet! And we can scoop our own food in the cafeteria!
There are 3 teams of us who make up 10 teams of crews: Rain Unit (mine!) with 4, Thunder Unit with 3, and Wind Unit with 3. There are 3 of us per team, but on any given day there are only 2 of us in the field with the "Participants." I'm psyched about the projects too. They are environmental projects, which are neat (though I hear that invasive species removal - aka weeding out plants that don't belong - can get quite montonous). We're gonna be doing stuff from changing regular light bulbs to CFLs (like I did some in NOLA), invasive species removal, water treatment, playground landscaping, trailwork, etc. Should be fun, though I'm sure it will be a challenge getting 14-17 year olds to have fun! They also planned trips to the zoo, rafting, soccer games, dragonboat festival, hiking, and other fun things around Colorado. As I learn more about the projects and what we'll be doing, I've been getting more and more excited.
The last few nights a bunch of us have been exploring all of the great things that the wonderful city of Denver has to offer during the summertime. Two nights ago a bunch of us (cross unit! yeah!) went to the Irish Festival and last night we went to a Bluegrass Festival. The music last night was AMAZING. I have become quite fond of bluegrass. I think they have different music festivals at this place all throughout the summer, so I'll def have to check it out again.
The kids (er, I mean participants) get here on Wednesday! Lots of planning with my co-crew leaders before they get here for team building, discipline, etc. I think by August 9th I'm gonna be tired of telling teenagers to tuck their shirts in.
