Surgery time

Text written in: English

The woman whose toe I saw amputated, and had previously been discharged, was back in her room lying down. When we went around on rounds, I found out that she was actually unconscious, due to a cerebral hemorrhage (bleeding in the brain). Her pupils were unresponsive, but she was still breathing on her own.

The doctor told me that the family did not want him to treat her, and later that morning, an ambulance came and took her home.

After the morning session, the doctor and I walked to a very nearby hospital, quite similar to his, where he performed another Cesarean. This one was quite bloody though, and was interesting because the baby was the wrong way around.

The feet came out first, followed by the rest. It took about 30 seconds I think to actually get the baby out, because there was a lot of manipulating to try and get the baby out. The head also seemed to be stuck for a few seconds as the doctor pulled the baby's legs to get him out.

Everything was OK though, baby was screaming and there didn't seem to be too much bleeding afterwards.

Because of the surgery and then having to have lunch, I only had a couple of hours back at the office before I had to go back to the hospital. Just time to stick loads of washing on to soak and get on the Internet for an hour.

In the evening, it was really quiet to start. Then lots of patients turned up at once, just like buses (except not Indian buses, as there's just so many everywhere all the time)

The first man we saw had an x-ray with him, and was complaining of pain. He'd fallen from his bike a while ago, and had been to another doctor, which is where he got the x-ray. That other doctor however, had told him there was nothing wrong with him, but the patient still had pain, which is why he had now come to my doctor.

He fairly rapidly found a broken rib, and slightly decreased kidney function. The reason that the healing process was taking so long was because the man was a diabetic, and had very high blood sugar levels, which what was also causing the damage to his kidneys. The man simply has to respect his diabetes and stop eating whatever he wants and popping a few pills afterwards, it order to get better.

I left a little early to go eat dinner with Ben, who had stayed at Kodaikanal one more night, as it was his birthday yesterday and Kim's today, and was now back in Sivakasi.

We then played some more cards, before crashing. Saw II was on though, so watched some of that.
