Up up and away

Text written in: English

Today we woke at the ridiculously early time of 6.15am to get breakfast at meet our guide at 7.30am. Unfortunately we found the cheap cafe booked out by a private function so we asked at the office where else we could go.  It turned out there was a cheaper, better place just outside the park and I would reccomend it fully to anyone coming through.  Anway, we teamed up with the two Australian girls, Annie and Laura, and met our guide Zulu.  A taxi ride to the starting gate and we were ready to go at about 8.30am.  Within 5mins we were coated in sweat and wondering when the uphill climbing would stop.  To our horror it continued for another 6hours.  Luckily there were rest stops every 45mins and our guide was happy to let us go as slow as we wanted.  At the rest stops these little squirrels would appear when they heard rustling food packaging.  One thought my leg looked like a nice hairy tree trunk to food and jumped at it, twice! It was humbling to see the local porters carrying all the food and supplies up for the resteraunt.  They had massively heavy loads on and were just powering past us.  At 2.30pm we finally reached our destination for the night, Laban Rata, at about 3000m above sea level.  After a well deserved noodle soup for lunch we hiked another 5mins up the hill to our accomodation, Panar Laban hut. This turned out to be an extremely cold hut and nobody really got any sleep.  This wasn't helped by the fact we were in bed by 8pm and had a 2am start to the summit!!
