Leaving the Nazca Lines and heading towards Puerto Inca, we made our way through the desert road, stopping off in the middle of this arid desert at Chauchilla Cemetery which had been raided over many centuries by grave robbers. We're amazed and shocked to learn of the destruction of history; the graves had been left exposed with bodies still preserved via mummification, some with knee length dreadlocks and clothing still attached. There was remains of human bones scattered across the landscape, ocassionally exposed through the sand, giving this guided tour a very eerie feel.
Continuing the journey to Puerto Inca to a great beach with Inca Ruins. Amazing spot by the sea and wish we had a bit more time here to relax. Only an afternoon and overnight here, so I pitched my tent on prime real estate only about 5m from the beach and a lovely sea view from the tent door!! We played beach volleyball followed by the main event, a game of football against the locals which must have lasted about 2 - 2.5 hours in the end when bad light stopped play with the score at 5-2 to team Tucan. A fantastic game despite the constant making up of rules by the local team, ah well, we all enjoyed it and the Sangria and BBQ went down a treat that night though most had an early night still struggling from the desert!!!
A long drive and early start tomorrow to get to Arequipa.
Useful Information for travelers:
No info, there is nothing here other than the beach and Inca ruins. There is a hotel next to the beach for toilet and cold shower facilities if you're camping.
