Last week in San Diego

Text written in: English

Sorry it has been a while, I haven't done a good job lately keeping up. I guess I've just been too busy. Hopefully I can remember everything that has happened now.

Wednesday – We went and worked on the trail. We left the trail early to have Wilderness Wednesday. This week we learned how to make a canteen. We used the yucca plant we had hollowed out and corked it with cactus. The cactus sealed the edges and hold water in the yucca tube. We also ate some of the cactus and it wasn’t bad at all.

Thursday – We again went and worked on the trail. We’ve gotten really far and the guy in charge of this park told us that we were a lot farther than he ever expected us to be. That was really nice to hear. I think 13 people work a lot faster than you would think. That night some people went out to dinner, but I decided to stay in. I had a nice relaxing time just laying around and watching a movie. When everyone else got back home we stayed up playing euchre.

Friday- We had to work on Saturday so we took Friday off. We got up and went to the zoo! The zoo was really neat. It had really nice landscaping with tons of animals. One of my favorites was the grizzly bears. There were two that played with each other the whole time. The zoo was a lot of fun, but I got tired of walking! That night Grant, Katie, Kevin, and I went to Boomers, which is like a Putt-Putt. We played a game of miniature golf and of course I lost. I’ve never been good at that game. Along the way we would make a bet, not at every hole, but a lot of them. Katie won getting her boots tied this last week; Kevin won a slurpee and Dairy Queen, Grant didn’t win anything, and I won the very last hole so got to steel from anyone I wanted. I definitely stole the Dairy Queen! We haven’t gone yet, but I’m sure we will!

Saturday – We worked on a Saturday! We met with some teenagers from the teen center of Lakeside to work on the trails. The teens were from a program and one of the things they are trying to do is go on a ski trip. In order to earn the money they do different community service projects. They had 12 teenagers work with our 12 on the trail. It worked out well with each of us working one on one with a teen. I enjoyed the day and the experience. I think everyone else did as well. I think the teens and the corps members gained a lot from this experience. I think it also helped us prepare for our next project in New Orleans. It gave us interaction with others and put us in a leadership position.

Sunday – It was a lazy morning and many people slept in. I did well and slept in till about 9. People made pancakes and we all had breakfast. That afternoon we went to Coronado Island. While we were there we walked down the coast as far as we could. We saw the historical hotel and from there we walked both ways down the beach and had to stop shortly each way due to the naval base and government property. The beach was really pretty. We saw starfish, hermit crabs, sand dollars, and jump roped using seaweed. After playing on the beach we walked around a little bit in town. There are a bunch of shops and places to eat. That evening we went into Gaslamp (area in downtown SD) and had dinner and walked around the shops there.

Monday – Since it is MLK Day we’re supposed to check with our sponsor to see what they do. The park is still open and therefore we still work as well. It wasn’t really a work day though. We went with our sponsor Patty out to the Anza Borrego National Park. It’s one of the largest National parks and it’s a huge desert, all surrounded by hills/mountains. I thought it would all be flat since it is a desert, but it wasn’t. It was very rocky and there were a lot of cactus. The Overland Trail runs through the park. The Overland Trail is what travelers took coming west for the Gold Rush. It’s the route that brought people into Southern California. We went and hiked along the trail and saw some of the wheel ruts that are still there. We also went and visited a house that was used as a stop along the way.
