still livin at the cabin

Text written in: English

Sunday - I hung out at the cabin while others went and did laundry. Then we went to downtown San Diego and went to all the little shops down there. They have some really cool stores that were fun to go in.

Monday - It was still raining... We worked on our discovery kit for the majority of the day. In the morning we worked on getting everything organized and figuring out what still needs to be done. That afternoon we went shopping with Patty to get all the supplies to put it all together. That night some of us stayed up playing euchre.
That is our new nightly activity. I enjoy it.

Tuesday - In the morning we went and hiked our Pata Ranch Road trails to see what kind of damage the rain did this weekend. It rained 4 inches and in Cali that is mega rain. They have flooding signs up all over town, but I haven't actually seen any kind of flooding, not even too many puddles on the roads. There were a few spots that needed fixed and we did that in the morning. That afternoon Patty met up with us to show us the other side of the Pata Ranch Road trails. We hiked through the trails and evaluated what needs to be done. On our way out we saw some dirt bikers go down the road. It's a private dirt road and all the land is private or owned by the county. Patty started yelling at them, but they couldn't hear her. She hopped in her truck and went down after them. The people who stayed behind put our van across the road so no one could get by. We heard them coming after like 30 minutes or so and called her. We stopped them and were talking when Patty drove up. She got on to them for riding out there. It was an exciting adventure. She can't do anything but scold them, but she still wanted to catch them. One of the funniest parts of the story was that it was two 40ish year olds and their Dad. Who would of thought anything else but a bunch of kids.

Wednesday - In the morning we worked on the discovery kit. We're getting closer to it being done. That afternoon we met a park ranger Steve. He showed us a new trail that we would be working on. We walked the trail and saw what we'd be doing the next couple of days. Then we had our weekly Wilderness Wednesday. This week we learned how to make a rope out of yucca leaves. The dried one you hit with wood on wood to make the leaf split apart, then you twine them together. Then we washed our hands in the fresh yucca. You take off the pointy sides and then the point at the end. Hit it wood on wood. Then dip it in water and rub together in your hands. It lathers a lot of forms a soap. After that we had to be blind folded and we had to find our way from the cabin to where Tom (the guy who leads the program) was hiding and had a bucket he was beating on. I was one of the last to find him and had to walk through poison oak to get there, but I made it, and hopefully won't get poison oak again. In the evening my cooking team made hamburgers out on the grill and then we made a fire in the fire pit. We played a game, basket of truth. We all put in a question. Then we'd read the question and go around the circle and answer them on paper. It made it all anonymous and it was funny to find out what some of the answers were.

Wilderness Wednesday people have a website and put us on there! It's backyardtourist.com and where it says the mission statement it has Wilderness Wednesdays under that.

Thursday - This morning I went with Abby and Bonnie to a high school. Abby is one of our cappers, which means that she does recruitment for Americorps NCCC. At their lunch we set up an information booth and handed out flyers and talked to people. It prob wasn't my favorite thing, but I had fun. In the afternoon we joined the team working on the trail we had looked at the day before.
